CATALYTIC AND JOINT VENTURE PROJECTS

The Council embarked on the completion and divestment from some of its catalytic and joint venture projects.  These projects had the primary objective of stimulating investment in resource-based industries, which has resulted in the establishment of similar projects in some parts of the country.

Some of the projects are:

KANKARA KAOLIN PROCESSING PLANT, KATSINA STATE.

The industrial grade kaolin plant has commenced production, while a centrifuge has been procured and incorporated into the second line for the production of the pharmaceutical grade kaolin in 2005.

PHOSPHATE PROCESSING PLANTS, SOKOTO AND OGUN STATES

The 60-tonnes per day plant at Sokoto, fabricated, by an indigenous engineering firm, Garner International Company Limited, to produce milled phosphate has commenced commercial production. The Federal Super Phosphate Fertilizer Company Limited, Kaduna is one of its customers.

On the other phosphate plant at Ifo in Ogun State, fabricated by another indigenous company, Langrad Engineering Company Limited, a test run was carried out. The Council plans to divest from the two projects subsequently.

CATALYTIC MODEL COCOA PROCESSING PLANT

The joint venture partner (Ondo State Government) and the Council resolved to divest from the project to allow private sector participation. The divestment process has commenced.

INTEGRATED LIVESTOCK/POULTRY PROJECT, BISICHI, JOS

The Council’s collaboration with National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), Vom, in the area of research in vaccine production culminated in the establishment of this project, with a private investor, Hamtul Investment

The plant consists of 3 sections namely:

- a hatchery section with the capacity of 2240 eggs flats (36 eggs/flat)

- a 100 tonnes/24 hour pelletizer, and

- a chick mash mill of 4 tonnes/day

All the equipment/machineries are on ground awaiting installation.

SERICULTURE PROJECT, ADO EKITI, EKITI STATE

Major achievements recorded with the sericulture project included:

- establishment of nuclear plots for mulberry multiplication with a total of over 4    hectares planted by the end of the rainy season.

-  establishment and maintenance of 3 pure races of silkworm for cocoon production.

About 500 farmers and some associations from Ekiti and surrounding States have registered to be supplied with eggs and cocoons as a result of the awareness created by the project.

FRUIT JUICE PROCESSING PLANT, KADUNA

The project is being sponsored by HIKIMA RESOURCES INDUSTRIES Ltd, a company jointly owned by the Council and a private investor.  The plant with a capacity of 1,000 litres per day has been test run and effort being made to obtain National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) certification prior to commercial production.

BROWN SUGAR PROJECT, KWALI, FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY (FCT)

The Council in collaboration with National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) commissioned a 10 tonnes per day brown sugar project at Kona Mada in Kwali Area Council of FCT. The National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI), Badeggi, fabricated the plant.

The Council is also supporting the farming of industrial sugarcane by the Kona Mada community through the funding of supply of improved sugar cane cuttings from NCRI. Badeggi.

INTEGRATED SOLID MINERAL PROCESSING PLANT, OWERRI, IMO STATE

The 3tonnes per hour plant has not been in operation since 2003 due to both operational and infrastructural problems.

The reactivation of the plant, which is in two phases, commenced with the existing plant and factories to be followed by the incorporation of additional equipment and 3 month’s test-production. With the incorporation of a primary crusher (jaw crusher) to the process, limestone and other minerals would be milled as industrial inputs.
