Report on Survey of Agro-Raw
Materials in Nigeria: Groundnut, 2004
ISBN: 978-8070-15-9
The report
shows that the total hectages of groundnut in twenty-three states of the
Federation amounted to 780.319 ha with average farm size in the country
amounting to 10.28 ha. The constraints of farmers include biotic and
abiotic stresses, low production prices. The report reveals a shortfall
of over 90% of groundnut requirements by companies involved in
processing. This indicates that there is a ready market for groundnut
producers in the country. The report also identifies 68 local groundnut
machinery fabricators and 40 foreign machinery/equipment manufacturers.
The local machines are however less sophisticated and mainly used for
oil extraction, expelling, decortication and shelling of groundnut. The
report also reveals that investment opportunities exist for groundnut
processors in areas of cooking oil, cake, peanut, butter, roasted salted
and coated nut and in production of a number of chocolate-based
products.
