Project Title:    Developing the Nigeria Bee Keeping industry for Honey/Other Hives for food and the pharmaceutical industries.

The beekeeping industry in Nigeria is becoming important in various sectors of the economy including, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and textiles sectors. However, in view of the challenge of standardization and specification to meet international and safety standards, the Council, as a first step, collaborated with the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment (FMITI) to facilitate several reconciliatory meetings of factions of Beekeepers Association in the Country, which culminated in the launch, on the 30th July, 2015 at NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja of a formidable commodity group- the Federation of Beekeepers Association of Nigeria (FEBKAN) as a national umbrella association for those operating within the Beekeeping sector.

The Council also collected and sent line bees and honey samples from same hives in 3 ecological zones of Nigeria (Ibadan, Umuahia, and Kaduna) to the International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), Nairobi, Kenya for analysis and preservation. The Council has the guidelines for Honey Exporters to the European Union (EU) for sensitization purpose.
