THE BIOFUEL HUNT
(A youth TV reality show on Science and Technology)

BACKGROUND

The ‘‘Biofuel Hunt’’ is the first series of a proposed annual youth TV reality show in Science and Technology, designed to promote the practical knowledge of science and technology in Nigeria. Fashioned along the likes of such programmes like ‘‘Gulder Ultimate Search’’ and ‘‘Big Brother Africa’’, the youth TV reality show has a potent force to transform the psyche of the nation, particularly her youths, towards embracing Science and Technology.

Currently, the general appeal of youths is tilted in favour of vocations such as fashion, music, dances and sports because of the commercial interests of multinational companies who have the financial muscle to sponsor pro-youth TV shows in these vocations. While this is a welcome development, we must as a people not loose focus of our peculiar need as a developing country.

As a developing country, Nigeria needs a solid foundation in Science and Technology to drive the economy, especially the industrial sector. It is in this realization that the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology seeks to exploit the power of television to refocus the passion of Nigerian youths, who are the nation’s vibrant knowledge bank, towards Science and Technology-based education and activities.

OBJECTIVES:            These include:

1.     To drive youth energy towards new inventions and innovation through practical application of Science and technology knowledge.

2.     To promote the culture of science and technology amongst Nigerians and ultimately use Science and Technology know-how to expand the economy of the nation.

PROGRAMME:

The youth TV reality show programme will run annually starting with the first competition on Biofuel Hunt , a 17-Day Scientific exploration which holds tentatively from 12th to 30th August, 2008. The structure of the Biofuel Hunt reality show include:

·        Lectures                                   -     1  week

·        Hunt (Field search)                 -      5 days

·        Workshop (Production)          -      5 days

This will culminate in the selection of eventual winners of the competition and the presentation of awards.

FUNDING

Funding is the critical element to the success of this programme.

The funding needs of this programme include:

·      High profile media campaign and life TV coverages of the activities of the competition

·      Awards of prizes

·      Materials, venues and logistics

Budget estimates put together by the Programme Planning and Organizing Committee, indicates that about N110 million is required to execute each competition per year, the bulk of which goes into the media campaign.

Considering the poor funding of the science and technology sector, the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology and its collaborators in this programme therefore seek partners and sponsors to make this programme a reality.

THE TECHNICAL PARTNER

The technical partner that is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology on this programme is a firm of Engineers known as Excellence in Engineering Project Conception(E-in-E). E-in-E is committed to the promotion of the best practices in Science and Technology on Television and in Nigeria.
