metallic mineral occurrences in the country that have not been explored
significantly include ferro – alloy minerals like molybdenite,
tantalite, zircon, ilmenite, wolfram, manganese, chromite and columbite.
Extensive exploration and evaluation have been carried out on many iron
ore deposits in Nigeria. Mining
of iron ore is currently taking place at Itakpe in Kogi State.
Mining of Iron ore deposit at Ajagbanoko, Oshokoshoko and Agbado-
Okudu which are chemically and geologically similar to Itakpe deposit is
yet to commence. The
combined reserves in these contiguous deposits are estimated at 170
million tonnes of up to 40% Fe which
can be beneficiated to about 67% Fe.
