Multi-Disciplinary Committee
Report of the Techno-Economic Survey on Chemical and Pharmaceutical
Sector, 2003 4th Update
ISBN: 978-8070-01-9
The update reveals low capacity utilization in most industries in this
sector due to unfriendly manufacturing environment, poor infrastructure
and economic reforms among others. The level of technology in these
factories traceable to local input, is very simple and rudimentary.
There is no intensive process involved except in the multi-national
companies where the production technologies in use were those obtained
from the parent companies abroad. The report also reveals that most of
the industrial raw materials are imported, as such, the R&D in the
development of locally available raw materials still remains very low.
The report identifies the need to develop some auxiliary industries such
as solid mineral beneficiation industries, petrochemical and LNG,
medicinal plants polymers and rubber, etc. as a way to accelerate the
rate of growth in the sector.
