Multi-Disciplinary Committee Report of the Techno-Economic Survey on
Motor Vehicles and
Miscellaneous Sector, 2003 4th Update
ISBN: 978-8070-07-8
The report
identifies nine vehicle, five motorcycle and two bicycle
assembly/manufacturing plants producing various brands of motor
vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles. The capacity utilization for most
of the industry is about 10% for manufacturers/assemblers and about 30%
for component manufacturers. The industry reached its peak in 1981 and
had since be on decline. The decline was accelerated with the
introduction of the structure adjustment programme in 1986. The report
suggests privatization of the steel plants, petrochemical complexes and
the electricity industry which will provide opportunity for local supply
of the raw materials and energy needed by the industry.
