The report is
an update of the nation-wide techno-economic surveys held in 1989, 1992,
1996 and 2000 on the raw materials used in the Base Metal, Iron and
Steel and Engineering Services Sector. The report reveals that raw
materials in the sector are largely available locally, but the
infrastructure and primary processing facilities for production continue
to remain undeveloped and therefore offers panacea to these problems.
It also reveals that there is considerable manpower resources and
expertise in research and development establishment in the sector but
they are not complemented by facilities, most of which are obsolete or
non-functional. The report gives an overview of the status of the
sector and the challenges as related to raw materials acquisition,
infrastructure, equipment and machinery, R&D facilities and activities,
incentives, manpower, finance and other resources needed to sustain the
sector.
