Status/Prospects:
Local
production of sugar is grossly inadequate, there is need to encourage
increased production in existing large sugar factories and establish new
mini sugar/ brown sugar factories throughout the country.
R&D Activities:
The National cereals Research Institute
(NCRI) Badeggi, has perfected a 10tcd mini brown sugar technology and
this technology is ready for commercialization by prospective investors.
The Sugar Research Institute, University of Ilorin has developed many
varieties of industrial sugar canes.
The Nigerian Sugar Council was established to catalyse investment
in sugar production in the country
