Status/Prospects:
Demand
for natural rubber is largely driven by two factors.
One of the increase in demand for private and commercial vehicles
and another is the increase in the use of non- tyre rubber products.
Under the assumption that the global economy and population will
continue to grow. It is
projected that world demand for natural rubber would reach 7.6 million
tonnes by 2005. Demand is
expected to grow fastest in developing countries by 3.3% annually.
2 major tyre producers in the country are utilizing crude rubber
locally.
R&D Activities:
The Rubber Research Institute of
Nigeria (RRIN, Benin) developed Alkyl resin, exposidised rubber seed
oil, glazier putty, liquid soap, skin cream, hair shampoo from rubber
seed oil (RSO).
Also developed from RSO were gloss paint, wood varnish and printing ink.
