Status/Prospects:
Plantain constitutes a major stable crop in the diet of Nigerians.  However, its major industrial potential is locally being explored. The upsurge in the sigatoka epidemics in the 90's reduced local production drastically .The R&D effort of  IITA to control the epidemics and the introduction of cooking banana as alternative to plantain ameliorated the incidence .

R&D Activities:
NIHORT'S efforts in the use of the crop for baby food preparation may stimulate more industrial usage of the crop
