Status/Prospects:
Maize with about 9% protein is a very
important raw material for the food industry.
Since it's introduction into West Africa in the 17th
century, it has successfully established itself as a dominant staple
food grain crop in several ecological zones of Nigeria.
Its production in the country has steadily increased and with
availability of improved varieties, production output is bound to
increase further. The
largest potential for maize production in Nigeria lies in the Savannas,
especially the Northern Guinea Savanna.
R&D Activities:
The Institute of Agriculture Research &
Training, Obafemi Awolowo University (Ife) One of the research Institute
saddled with the mandate of developing appropriate maize varieties for
different ecological zones had developed 6 striga resistant maize
hybrids in striga endemic areas of Ogun and Oyo states. Western yellow1
and White Pop (Pop corn) were also developed and released nationwide,
and impact assessment of adoption of 15% and 30% respectively.
