Status/Prospects:
Nigeria is the 3rd leading
producer and exporter of Cocoa in Africa with a projected production
value of 160,000 MT by the year 2005 (F.A.O 2000).
Consumption of cocoa world wide is expected to reach about 3.0
million tonnes by the year 2005, with producers like Nigeria expected to
increase local processing of the beans to add value to their export
RMRDC
catalysed investment in cocoa processing by establishment in conjunction
with Ondo State Government a cocoa processing plant in Ondo State.
Although this plant has not taken off it brought about
establishment of similar ventures by private investors in other States
R&D
Activities:
Cocoa
Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN), Ibadan, has developed:
(1) Process for producing high quality sweet wine (8-12% v/v) and dry
wine (17-18% v/v) from Cocoa juice.
(2) Washing liquid and bar soap from potash (92%) purity derived
from Cocoa pod husk.
(3) Cheap feeds for Poultry and Pigs from dry Cocoa Pod husk to replace
25% maize in the diet of the animals.
(4) recipes for pure Chocolate bars, chocolate blends with Kola, coffee
or cashew.
