tonnes by 2005 (F.A.O. 2000) with Cameroon and Cote d' Ivoire leading in
Africa.
Nigeria has high potentials for local production and export of
this commodity.
R&D Activities:
The National Horticultural Research
Institute (NIHORT), Ibadan established in 1975, which has the national
mandate to develop sustainable techniques for production and utilization
of Horticultural crops (including fruits) has come up with the
following:-
*Collected and conserved germ plasm of fruit crops.
*Developed rapid multiplication methods for fruit propagates.
*Developed appropriate post harvest handling techniques for fruit crops
to
ensure a reduction of post-harvest losses.
*Developed process technologies for cottage level production of :-
-bottled fruit juice from citrus, pine apple and mango;
-jam from paw paw, mango & other indigenous fruits;
-biscuits and other confectioneries products from plantain;
-weaning food using plantain in conjunction with grains like soybeans
and
maize.
