Broad Objectives of RMIS

The project shall harness and disseminate information on raw materials development, and would encapsulate the following objectives:

i.          Assist member states in strengthening their national capacities of collection, storage and utilization of data on raw materials for purposes of planning, investment promotion and the attainment of self-reliance in their sectors.

ii.         Promote exchange of raw materials information among member states.

iii.       Establish a system which will improve access to both statistical and other numerical databanks.

iv.       Promote the improvement of information infrastructure in member states.

v.        Train information specialists at regional and sub regional levels in order to upgrade skills and introduce modern methods of raw materials information handling.

vi.       Promote use of common methodologies of data handling among member states and ensure compatibility with other international information systems.

vii.       Enhance information flow to other member countries of the G-77 and thereby promote effort towards strengthening south-south cooperation.

Action so far taken;

bullet Feasibility studies were conducted in 1992 and 1995 to assess the possibility of establishing the RMIS in Africa. The study was financed by the Perez-Guerero Trust Fund.
bullet As a result of the feasibility study, four cities (Cairo, Nairobi, Dakar, Abuja) were identified as possible centres of the sub-regions.
bullet The Secretariat of the ACRM has been established in the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) in Abuja, Nigeria.
bullet Two expert meetings were held in Nigeria in 1989 and 2006 respectively, to evolve strategies to implement the various ACRM plan of action.
bullet The Secretariat has commenced the publication of a regular magazine to promote the raw materials potentials and availability in member countries. The maiden edition of the magazine is to be released this month.
